Sylvester Uthe, 88, of Nevada, died Friday, Feb. 16, 2007. Services are pending at the Bacon Funeral Home in Nevada.

THE AMES TRIBUNE, Ames, Story County, Iowa, Sunday, February 18, 2007.

Sylvester V. Uthe, 88, of Nevada, died Friday, Feb. 16, at home surrounded by his family. Funeral services will be at 2 p.m. Tuesday, Feb. 20, at St. Patrick's Catholic Church in Nevada. Visitation will be from 6 to 8 p.m. Monday, Feb. 19, at the Bacon Funeral Home in Nevada. A Christian vigil service will follow visitation. Burial will be in St. Patrick's Cemetery in Nevada.

Sylvester was born Sept. 27, 1918, at the homeplace northwest of Gilbert, to Frank Sr. and Martha (Elsner) Uthe. He attended a one-room school in rural Boone County and Gilbert High School. He married Lila N. Mortvedt on Jan. 18, 1944, at St. Peter and Paul's Catholic Church in rural Story County. They lived on the homeplace near Gilbert before moving to a farm south of Ames. They farmed there for 23 years. In 1970, they bought a farm south of Nevada where they lived and farmed for 37 years. Sylvester passed his love of farming onto his son and grandson. He was a member of St. Patrick's Catholic Church and Story County Farm Bureau. He enjoyed spending time with his family and teasing his grandchildren.

He is survived by his wife, Lila Uthe, of Nevada; daughters Linda Uthe, of Nevada, Anita Uthe, of Nevada, Marlene (Lyle) Borkowski, of Manning, Karen (Alan) Knaphus, of McCallsburg and son Doug (Sue) Uthe, of Nevada; grandchildren Renee and Ross Uthe and Kari and Amy Borkowski; one brother, Raymond Uthe, of Ames, and one sister, Dorothy Welsh, of Colo.

He was preceded in death by his parents, three brothers, and five sisters.

Bacon Funeral Home in Nevada is in charge of arrangements.
