Ames Daily Tribune, Saturday, Aug 29, 1942. Pioneer Dies Here Succumbs to Heart Attack. John E. Lanning, 66, a long-time resident of Ames, died at Mary Greeley hospital Friday afternoon at 3:45 after a two week illness of a heart ailment. He was removed to the hospital from his home at 112 East Avenue Tuesday morning. He was born August 22, 1876, on a farm near Marengo, Iowa, in Iowa County, the only son of John W. and Elizabeth Marcellus Lanning. The family moved to Ames in 1860 and this has been his home since with the exception of four years at Estherville, Iowa. Mr Lanning, early in life became connected with the mercantile business of Ames, and several years of his young manhood was spent in the grocery store of Mrs. W S Bradley, a pioneer business woman of the city. For twenty years he traveled for the Lagomarcipo-Grape Wholesale Fruit Compoany of Cedar Rapids, and later opened the Hubbard-Lanning Company here, which he operated for about ten years, continuing in the fruit business. Following this period, he was employed as manager of the fruit department of the Estherville Grocery company. After four years there he returned to Ames and continued in the fruit business under the name of the Lanning Fruit Company, being associated with his sons. In December, 1897, Mr Lanning was united in marriage with Miss Nettie Lang at Nevada, Iowa, who died in 1916. In 1917 he was again married to Miss Hattie Mae Connor at White Pigeon, Mich. Surviving are his sons, David and Daniel Lanning of this city, and his daughter, Mrs Orville I. Parker of Elkhart, Indiana, the former Mary Jane Lanning; also his three sisters, Miss Myrtle Lanning, and Mrs Julia Gossard of Ames and Mrs C C Morrison of Seattle, Washington. Funeral services will be held at Adams Chapel Sunday afternoon at four o'clock with Rev A H Barker of the Methodist church officiating. Burial will be made in the family plot in the Ames Cemetery.
