John Birkestrand

John Birkestrand, 86, of Ballard Creek in Huxley, died Wednesday, Nov. 8, at Israel Family Hospice House in Ames.

He was born on Feb. 10, 1920, in Cambridge, the son of Albert J. and Anna Margaret (Johnson) Birkestrand.

He farmed in the Cambridge and Huxley areas and was in the U.S. Army Air Corps during World War II. On Dec. 29, 1972, he married Lois Anderson.

Survivors include stepsons, Roger Anderson of Clear Lake, Rick Anderson of Ankeny and Ron Anderson of Ankeny; two sisters, Stella Carley of Las Vegas, Nev., and JoAnne Gregg of Decorah; one brother, Clifford Birkestrand of Huxley; seven grandchildren and six great-grandchildren.

He was preceded in death by his parents, his wife Lois and his brother Arnold.

Visitation was 5-7 p.m. Friday, Nov. 10, at Fjeldberg Lutheran Church in Huxley. Services were at 10 a.m. Saturday, Nov. 11, at Fjeldberg Lutheran Church with the Rev. Tom Hilger officiating. Burial was in the Slater City Cemetery.

Soderstrum-Riis Funeral Home, Slater, was in charge of the arrangements. Memorials are requested to Fjeldberg Lutheran Church.
