Charles Haverly, 81, a pioneer resident of Ames and a Civil War veteran, died at his home at 211 East Lincoln Way this morning at 6:30 following a weeks illness from throat infection and paralysis. Mr Haverly attended school at Albany, New York from where he came to Iowa in 1859, settling at Koszta. Later he came to Ams where he has lived for 43 years up to the time of his death. He received a commission of Captain while serving in the Civil War during which time his hip and one of hands was injured. At one time Mr. Haverly and John Lanning owned a mill which was located where the Ames Produce house now stands. In 1907 he took the position of postmaster in the local office and remained in that capacity until he was relieved by L. M Bosworth in 1911. He had also served as justice of the peace for seven years. He leaves one son, John; and three daughters, Mrs Elmer Coffin, Mrs Bertha Foster and Mrs C. B. Nelson, all of Ames, his wife having died eight years ago. Funeral services will be held Sunday afternoon at 1:30 in the Methodist Church. the Masonic Lodge will have charge of the ceremony and Dr. F. C. Edwards will conduct the services.
