Hembrough graduated from Jacksonville High School in 1943 and attended Illinois College prior to graduating from Our Saviours Nursing School in Jacksonville, Ill. She worked as a registered nurse in Galesburg and Champaign, Ill. and Ames until she retired. She loved being a registered nurse and spoke fondly of her patients, her fellow nurses and her student nursing days in St. Louis, Mo.Hembrough and her husband, Frederick, built the Hembrough Animal Hospital in Jacksonville, Ill. during the 1950s. It brought her much joy to work side-by-side with her veterinarian husband and treat large and small animals together. When Hembrough and her husband moved to Ames where Frederick taught in the College of Veterinary Medicine at Iowa State University, Dorothy became and remained active in the ISU Veterinary Auxiliary, ISUs Faculty Womens Club, Mary Greeley Hospitals Volunteer Auxiliary, the Collegiate Methodist Church, the Nevada O.D.O. group and was an avid fan of ISU basketball.
More than anything, Hembrough loved her family. She was the heart of the Hembrough home, always striving to comfort through delicious meals, a welcoming home, beautiful flower gardens and holidays made special because of all her efforts. She was a good neighbor and friend to so many and always had a helpful spirit towards people and animals in need.
Our family will remember her for all the love she gave us. She softened the hard edges of life for us, and we are all changed forever by the life she shared so sweetly and courageously with us.
