Kenneth Craig, 82, of Ames died Monday, Oct. 9, at Mary Greeley Medical Center. A funeral service will be held at 11 a.m. Friday, Oct. 13 at Ascension Lutheran Church with Rev. John Anderson officiating. Burial will be in Story Memorial Garden Cemetery.Kenneth Craig was born April 25, 1924, in Ames, to Harold and Ollie (Ellingson) Craig. He graduated from Ames High in 1942 and started to work in the carpenter shop at Iowa State that fall.
He was drafted into the U.S. Army in 1943. After serving a year in the states, he went to England; from there he went to France, where he was in the St. Lo breakthrough, and then on to Belgium, Germany, Luxemburg and Austria.
While on a 30-day furlough in 1945, he married Pauline Larson, of Roland. Two months later, he was discharged and moved back to Ames, where he returned to the carpenter shop; he worked there ever since. He took great pride in his carpentry. There are many examples of his fine work at Iowa State University and in homes throughout the Ames area. He enjoyed gardening, fishing, visiting his family and his dog, Coco.
He is survived by his wife, Pauline, of Ames; three daughters, Cynthia (Jeff) Cox, of Highlands, N.C., Sharon (Mick) Bestland, of Hugo, Minn., and Carla (Mark) Robertson, of Ames; two sons, David (Kim) Craig, of Eugene, Ore., and Steven (Debra) Craig, of Coos Bay, Ore.; one sister, Betty (Tom) Cummings, of Ames; 10 grandchildren and seven great grandchildren.
Visitation will be from 5 to 7 p.m. Thursday, Oct. 12, at Ascension Lutheran Church.
Memorials can be made to the Ascension Lutheran Church Building Fund.
