Walter W. Cottrill, 79, of Ames, died Friday, Sept. 22. A visitation with family and friends will be from 3 to 6 p.m. Tuesday, Sept. 26, at Stevens Memorial Chapel in Ames.Walter was born Oct. 30, 1926, in Cedar Rapids to Harry and Oleta Cottrill. He moved to Ames at the age of three. He was a 1945 graduate of Ames High School. He was enlisted in the U.S. Army from 1944-46. During that time, he married Phyllis Koontz May 5, 1945, at Camp Fannin in Tyler, Texas.
He worked for the Ames theaters from 1945-48. He joined the Ames Post Office in 1948 and retired in 1982. He was employed by the Iowa State University athletic department for 40 years. Following retirement, he also worked for the Ames schools.
He was a member of the American Legion Post 37; past president of the Ames Area Bowling Association and a member of its Hall of Fame. He coached junior league bowling for many years.
He is survived by his wife, Phyllis Cottrill, of Ames; two daughters, Linda (Larry) Fullerton, of Ames, and Melanie Lee, of Boone; three sons, Dave (Pat) Cottrill, of Ames, Jeff (Pam) Cottrill, of St. Paul, Minn., and Chris (Lorrie) Cottrill, of Ames; 16 grandchildren; and 28 great grandchildren.
He was preceded in death by his parents.
