Gene E. Dougherty, 67, of Ames, died Thursday, Sept. 14, at home. Funeral services will be at 11 a.m. Wednesday, Sept. 20, at Collegiate United Methodist Church in Ames with the Rev. Scott Grotewald officiating. Burial will be in Collegiate United Methodist Church columbarium.Visitation will be from 5 to 7 p.m. Tuesday, Sept. 19, at Adams Funeral Home in Ames.

Gene E. Dougherty, 67, of Ames, died Thursday, Sept. 14, at home. Funeral services will be at 11 a.m. Wednesday, Sept. 20, at Collegiate United Methodist Church in Ames with Rev. Scott Grotewald officiating. Burial will be in the Collegiate United Methodist Church columbarium.
Gene E. Dougherty, of Ames, was born May 8, 1939, in Marshall County to Martha and Charles Dougherty. After his mother's death when he was 5 years old, he was raised by his great aunt, Laura McGrew Frankforth. Early years were spent in the Gilman area where he graduated from Gilman High School. After majoring in accounting in college, he became a certified public accountant and certified financial planner and worked for 43 years in that profession in Ottumwa and Ames. He operated his own firm in Ames for 34 years.
In 1958, he married Lynell Mitchell in Gilman. They have three children, Carolyn (Kurt) Brouwer, of Seoul, Korea, Laura Martin, of Ankeny, and Alan Dougherty, of Jersey City, N.J. There are three grandchildren, Andrew, Jacob and Katelyn Martin, of Ankeny.
Gene had many interests and hobbies, including flying, scuba diving, 1956 DeSoto Firelight, farming, travel, old radios, jogging and many more. He ran 10 marathons and many 5K, 10K and 20K runs. Family and business would be at the top of that list. Gene was a member of Collegiate United Methodist Church, a former member of Ames Noon Kiwanis, former Division Lt. Governor for the Nebraska-Iowa District of Kiwanis, member of Golden K Kiwanis, and the YSS and Heartland Senior Center Boards.
Surviving are his wife, Lynell; their three children and three grandchildren; one sister, Joann (David) Paul of Coralville; two brothers, Merle (Linda) Dougherty of Fountain Valley, Calif., and Don (Dolly) Dougherty of Minnetonka, Minn.; mother-in-law, Nellie Mitchell of Tucson, Ariz.; and many nieces and nephews.
Preceding him in death were his parents; one brother, Richard; and great aunt.
Visitation will be from 5 to 7 p.m. Tuesday, Sept. 19, at Adams Funeral Home in Ames.Memorials may be made to Youth and Shelter Services, Collegiate United Methodist Church, or Mary Greeley Medical Center Homeward Hospice.
