Helen E. Williams, 84, of Ames, died Thursday, Sept. 14, at Israel Family Hospice House surrounded by her children after a courageous battle with melanoma. Funeral services will be at 11 a.m. Saturday, Sept. 16, at New Providence Friends Church in New Providence. Burial will be in Eastlawn Memorial Gardens in Eldora.Helen was born Sept. 11, 1922, in Lawn Hill to Marion and Ida (Vestal) Shore. After graduating from New Providence High School in 1939, she attended AIB in Des Moines. Before she retired in 1975, she worked in banking at Union-Whitten Savings Bank, First National Bank of Eldora and was the branch bank manager of New Providence Bank. She was a loving and devoted mother who always made time at the end of her day to attend her children's school activities.
She loved spending time with her family, especially her grandchildren and great-grandchildren. She enjoyed volunteer work at Gilbert Community Schools and taking bus tours to various locations of interest. She had great fun with her Red Hat friends. She was an avid sports fan and especially followed the Chicago Cubs and Iowa State Cyclones.
She is survived by one son, Doug (Pam) Williams, of Ames; two daughters, Vicki (Gene) Oxley, of Marshalltown, and Jane (Steve) Terrill, of Ames; five grandchildren; five great-grandchildren; two brothers, Charles Shore, of Eldora, and Boyd Shore of Ohio, along with nieces and nephews.
She was preceded in death by her parents, Marion and Ida Shore, and one sister, Ruth Moon.
Visitation will be from 5 to 7 tonight at Stevens Funeral Home in Ames. There also will be a visitation one hour before the service at the New Providence Friends Church.
