THE AMES TRIBUNE, Ames, Story County, Iowa, Tuesday, June 27, 2006.
Joseph L. Riley Jr., 70, of Indianola and formerly of Story City, died from complications of ALS Saturday, June 24, in Alexandria, Minn. Funeral services will be at 11 a.m. Thursday, June 29, at Grace United Methodist Church in Story City. Burial will be at a later date at Resthaven Cemetery in West Des Moines.
Joe was born March 2, 1936, in DeSoto, to Bessie Mary (Zimmer) and Joseph L. Riley Sr. He graduated from DeSoto High School in 1954. He married Alice Blair Aug. 27, 1960. He attended Iowa State and the graduated from the University of Iowa in 1958 with a bachelor's degree in biology and a master's degree in biomedical engineering in 1961. They lived in Ames from 1967 to 1978 and then moved to Story City until moving to Indianola in May 2006.
He worked at Collins Radio in Cedar Rapids, then the National Animal Disease Center for 27 years, taught at Northeast Iowa Community College and tutored at DMACC. He was a member of Grace United Methodist Church, Gideons and Kiwanis. He enjoyed gardening, fishing and woodworking.
He is survived by his wife, Alice, of Indianola; two sons, David (Kari), of LaCrescent, Minn., and Steven (Jamie), of Portland, Ore.; one daughter, Laurie Riley, of Anamosa; two grandchildren, Emily and Weston; and one brother, James (Martha) Riley, of Galesville, Wis.
He was preceded in death by his parents.
Visitation will be from 5 to 7 p.m. Wednesday at Soderstrum Funeral Home in Story City.
In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to Grace United Methodist, Ottertail United Methodist Church, New Hope Ministries or ALS Research.
