Wendell Sutherland, 57, of Ames, died Wednesday, June 14. Funeral services are pending with Stevens Memorial Chapel in Ames.

Wendell D. Sutherland, 57, of Ames, died Wednesday, June 14, at Mary Greeley Medical Center. He was a loving husband, father and "Poppie."

Funeral services will be at 10 a.m. Monday, June 19, at Stonebook Church in Ames. Cremation will follow the service.

He was born March 26, 1949, in Nevada to Harry and Wilma (Chitty) Sutherland. He graduated from Nevada High School in 1967. He worked as a crane operator for Earl Rusher Crane Rental and later managed Eagle Grove Crane Rental. He retired from Crane Rental and Rigging in Des Moines. He loved to spend time with his girls, Autumn, Chloe and Mattie, and his dogs, Weston and Molly.

He married Nancy Scott Oct. 13, 1979, in Nevada. He was a member of International Union of Operating Engineers, Local 234.

He is survived by his wife, Nancy Sutherland of Ames; three daughters, Julie (Matt) Nelson of Boone; Heather (Ron) Dyer of Des Moines and Holly (Tim) Figenshaw of Ankeny; eight grandchildren, Autumn, Chloe, Mattie, Alicin, Erin, Cara, Kyle and Cadee; four brothers, Gary (Bonnie) Sutherland of Marshalltown, Craig (Julie) Sutherland of Nevada, Neil (Marcia) Sutherland of Ames and Chuck (Susie) Sutherland of Des Moines; and one sister, Sandy (Kent) Ryan of Ankeny.

He was preceded in death by his parents.

A visitation will be from 2 to 4 p.m. Sunday, June 18, at Stevens Memorial Chapel in Ames.
