Ruth Gertrude Orr, 96, of Donnellson, died Saturday, June 10, at Donnellson Health Center. A family graveside service will be at a later date at Greenwood Cemetery in Muscatine.

Ruth was born April 20, 1910, in Muscatine, the daughter of Wilmot and Alberta (Smeenk) Conkling. She attended Muscatine High School. She married Harley L. Orr May 16, 1936, at First Presbyterian Church in Muscatine. She was a homemaker and also worked for Western Union and National Research.

She had a lifelong interest in nature, especially native wildflowers and wild song birds. She was a member of Lady Bird Johnson Wildflower Center, the Neal Smith National Wildlife Refuge Prairie Learning Center, the National Bird Feeding Society, the Nature Conservancy and Federated Women's Club. The National Wildlife Federation recognized her yard as a backyard wildlife habitat due to its wealth of native wildflowers, migratory songbird visitors and nesting native songbirds.

In her retirement years, she lived in Ames with her daughter.

She was a member of First Presbyterian Church. Her family remembers her as a kind gentle person who was always bright, witty and insightful. Her family always came first.

She is survived by one daughter, Cythia D. Pease of Ames; one son, Larry K. Orr of Farmington; four grandchildren; four great-grandchildren; three nieces; and three nephews.

She was preceded in death by her husband; her parents; two sisters; and two brothers.
Memorials may be directed to the Iowa Natural Heritage Foundation in Des Moines.
