THE AMES TRIBUNE, Ames, Story County, Iowa, Sunday, June 11 2006.

Delmar Darwin Johnson, 78, of Ames, died Thursday, June 8, at Mary Greeley Medical Center after a battle with emphysema. Services will be at 10:30 a.m. Monday, June 12, at First United Methodist Church in Coon Rapids, with Rev. Lynn Gunderson officiating. Burial with military honors will be at Union Township Cemetery, near Coon Rapids.

Delmar was born July 6, 1927, to Henry Mason and Iva Lorraine (Bean) Johnson in Viola Township, near Coon Rapids. He was the eighth of 12 children. He attended country school in Orange Township and graduated from Coon Rapids High School in 1945. Delmar served in the United States Maritime Service following graduation.

On April 16, 1946, Delmar married Arlene Scott at the Methodist Church in Albany, Ga. They returned to Coon Rapids in 1947 and had three sons. Delmar worked in construction with his father Henry Johnson for 20 years and then was self-employed. In 1969, the family moved to Ames where he worked as General Superintendent for R. Friedrich & Sons. After the death of his wife in 1987, Delmar stayed in Ames.

While in Coon Rapids, Delmar was a member of First United Methodist Church where he served as church school superintendent, lay speaker, trustee, Sunday school teacher and MYF advisor. He was Drill Master of the Coon Rapids Fire Department. He assisted with Cub Scouts and Boy Scouts. Delmar served as a Trustee of the Coon Rapids Utilities for a term. Delmar was a member of Collegiate Methodist Church in Ames. He will be remembered as a hard-working handyman and inventor. Delmar would tackle just about any fix-it project and even built his own computer.

Preceding Delmar in death are his wife; parents; two sisters Juanita June Johnson and Geraldine Huggins; and six brothers, Deake Dee, in infancy, Floyd, Verne, Darell, Claire and Donald Johnson.

He is survived by his three sons, David (Kathy) Johnson of Omaha, Neb., Dan (Sonia) Johnson of Milledgeville, Ill., and Doug (Terri) Johnson of Aurora, Ill.; 15 grandchildren; seven great grandchildren; brothers Duane (Juanita) Johnson of Bayard and Marvin (Clara) Johnson of Coon Rapids; sister Donna Buswell of Scranton; sisters-in-law Mary Lou Johnson of Coon Rapids and Grace Johnson of San Diego, Calif.; nieces, nephews, other relatives and friends.

A memorial in Delmar's name has been established and may be sent to Dave Johnson, 12424 Evans St., Omaha, Neb. 68164.

A visitation will be after 3 p.m. today with family present 3 to 6 p.m., at Odhe Funeral Home, Coon Rapids.
