THE AMES TRIBUNE, Ames, Story County, Iowa, Friday, May 19, 2006.

Michael Shawn Smith, 40, of Slater, took his life Wednesday, May 17, at Big Creek near Polk City.

A gathering in memory of Michael has been planned for friends and family from 5 to 8 p.m. Tuesday, May 23, at the log cabin at Nelson Park in Slater. The body was cremated.

Michael was born Dec. 2, 1965, in Ames to George and Barbara (Newell) Smith. He has resided throughout his life in the Slater area. He graduated from Ballard High School in 1984. He worked as a furnace and air conditioning installer for Ames Heating and Cooling for more than 20 years.

Never married, Michael adored his daughter, Samantha, a sophomore at Ballard High School. He was an outdoorsman who enjoyed hunting deer, elk, ram and turkey and traveled to Texas to hunt wild boar.

He is survived by one daughter, Samantha McKenzie Smith of Slater; his father, George Smith of Slater; three brothers and a sister, Dwight Smith of Des Moines, Valerie Kraft of Slater, Travis Smith of Hubbard and Dustin Smith of West Des Moines.

He was preceded in death by his mother, Barbara Smith.
