Raymond E. "Barney" Ackerman, 78, of Nevada, died Friday, Sept. 19, at Rolling Green Village where he had been a resident since April.

He was born Feb. 20, 1925, in Nevada to Ben and Eva (Earl) Ackerman. He served in the Marine Corps during W.W. II. He married Eileen Greiner on Oct. 19, 1946, at the St. Patrick's Catholic Church in Nevada. He started in farming and later owned and operated businesses in Nevada before retiring from Hoffman LaRoche of Ames in 1987. He was a member of the St. Patrick's Catholic Church in Nevada, William F. Ball American Legion in Nevada, V.F.W. of Arkansas, 3rd and 4th degree of Knights of Columbus and a 10-year member of the Nevada Fire Department. Barney and Eileen moved from Nevada to Fairfield Bay, Ark., in 1987.

Survivors include his wife, Eileen Ackerman of Nevada; three sons, Dennis Ackerman (and Tonia) of Des Moines, Joe Ackerman (and Tammy) of Nevada, and Bob Ackerman (and Jean) of Omaha, Neb.; eight daughters, Ruth Clements (and Dennis) of Centre, Ala., Diane Horn (and Dennis) and Judy Ackerman (and Jack Mathews), both of Des Moines, Sharon Speery (and Eldon) of Polk City, Mary Severson and Jean Kingsbury (and Ron), both of Nevada, Terri Arnold (and Randy) of Story City, and Kathy Bodenhamer (and Bob) of Mt. Home, Ark.; 28 grandchildren; 11 great-grandchildren; a brother, Paul Ackerman (and Georgia) of Nevada; four sisters, Marjorie Fox of Chicago, Ill., Nora Kinyon (and Leo) of Ames, Helen Williams (and Don) of Nevada and Mary Landis (and Terry) of Anita.

He is preceded in death by his parents; an infant daughter, Denice in 1959; a sister, Mary Katherine Croker; and a brother, Carl Ackerman.

A vigil service and rosary was held following visitation on Monday. Catholic Funeral Mass was held Tuesday, Sept. 23 at the Memorial Lutheran Church with Father Jon Seda officiating. Burial, with military rites, followed in the St. Patrick's Catholic Cemetery.

Barney's granddaughter Jamie Ackerman suffers from Wolf-Hirschhorn Syndrome, and memorials may be directed to the Children's Home Health Care/Children's World, 7815 Farnam Drive, Omaha, Neb. 68114. Chet Ryan Mortuary in Nevada handled arrangements.
