Douglas R. Nelson, MBA, J.D., C.P.A., 61, died Saturday, March 25, at Sioux Valley Hospital USD Medical Center of heart disease.
Doug was born Aug. 29, 1944, in Ames to Eileen and Roy Nelson. He grew up playing and winning in all kinds of sports in Jewell. He graduated with distinction from Iowa State University in 1966 with a bachelor's degree in industrial administration. He taught at the University of Iowa while earning an MBA in 1968 followed by a jurist doctorate degree in 1974. After passing the bar exam, he joined the accounting firm of McGladrey and Pullen. He worked in several of their district offices before moving to Sioux Falls, S.D., and becoming a partner in 1981. Due to heart disease, he retired early from the firm in 1991 and went back to his first love - teaching at the college level. He taught accounting courses, tax and business law at Sioux Falls College and later at Augustana College. His teaching career included positions at Iowa State University, University of Iowa and Marquette University. He was a mentor for countless students, guiding them toward career paths in accounting and law for the past 15 years. Education was most important to him along with his family and his professional life. When he wasn't teaching, it was likely that you could find him teeing off at Prairie Green Golf Course near his home in Sioux Falls.
He married Carolyn Corken in 1967 and had two boys. In 1991, he married Arlys Rath. He was the father to four boys, Andrew Nelson (Christina) of Missoula, Mont., Matthew Nelson of Minneapolis, Michael Rath of Harrisburg, S.D., and Jeffrey Rath of Bremerton, Wash. He has one granddaughter, Sylvie Nelson. He is survived by his wife, Arlys; his above mentioned children; one brother, James (Karen) Nelson of Story City; one sister, Judy (Doug) Galles of Azle, Texas; and several nieces and nephews.
He was preceded in death by his mother and father.
Funeral services were Tuesdayat Augustana Chapel of Reconciliation with a reception following at the Stevens Center in the Augustana Commons. His online obituary and register book maybe seen at www.consolingmemories.com.
