John George Kopf was born in Wurtemberg, Germany, on September 28, 1833 and died at Maxwell, July 4, 1912. He came to the United States in 1852 and located at Green Castle in Jasper County in 1854. He remained there five years until with friends, he traveled to the gold fields of California and Nevada. Then in 1866 he returned to Washington Township, Polk County, Iowa.
He was married May 29, 1866, to Margaret J. Little. They had eight children. Three died in infancy and Nathan died at Farrar at the age of 23 years. The other children were Anna M. (Eide) of Story City, Iowa, George and Andrew of Farrar and Charles E. of Benton, Oregon. John gave the plot of ground for the cemetery at Farrar and his son Nathan, who died in 1893, was the first to be buried there.
John was closely associated with the church and the community. In 1884, he and his family became members of the Methodist Protestant Church located at Farrar.
Margaret Little Kopf died January 3, 1875. John George Kopf went on to marry twice more. In 1896, John George Kopf retired from active business life and located in Maxwell, Iowa where he resided until his death.
