William Hartung was born near Erfart, Germany, January 6, 1821. He came to the United States in 1858 and settled on a farm northeast of Farrar. He married Mary Kopf in 1860. She was from Wuerttemberg, Germany, and came to the United States at the age of 21 years to live near Greencastle, Iowa, where her brother John Kopf lived. They were the parents of six children, among them Ursula Hartung Carver, Anna Hartung Mowen and William Hartung, all of Maxwell.
William and Mary Anna were pioneers in Washington Township. They endured the hardships of the pioneers and saw the prairies develop into rich fields and fine homes. They were members of the Evangelical Church at Mt. Zion (Loring) where both were buried. Their home was a stopping place for the old time evangelical circuit rider until the church was organized.
William died in 1911 at the age of 90. Mary Anna died in 1921 at the age of 86.
