Book: Maxwell 1883-1983

The Bates settled on a farm east of Nevada in 1864. Joseph Bates and his second wife Rebecca had three children: Rhoda, Stephen and Elnathan.

Rhoda Bates married Gilbert Barber. She died at the age of 25 years.

Stephen Bates married Mary Catherine Alldredge. They had nine children: Minnie Almedia who married Chester Van Way and had three children; Calvin, who had one child; Nancy, who died in infancy; Lucy Alwilda who married Ira Tegarden and had two children; Martha Elizabeth and Joseph Elnathan; Clarence Park who married Anna Moore; Grover Bird who married Naomi Fox and had three children; and lastly Elvin Leroy, who married Lone Fox.

Elnathan Bates, born April 17, 1853, married Margaret Miller and had four children: Ada May, who married Frank Whitaker and had two sons, Elmer and Claude; Mary Adelle, who married Frank Robinson; Leland, who married Mary Raimer, and Eland, who married Myrtle Gardner and had eight children.
