Born on the farm his grandfather Abraham Strickler established on land he had been warranted in the 1790's. As a young man he began work on riverboats traveling up and down the Ohio River. He saved his money with the intention of homesteading. His dream was slowed by marriage and seven children. He gave up the riverboats and settled down on a modest but successful farm in Tyrone Twp. In the fall of 1860 he decided that after Christmas he would set out towards the west. He had seen fliers about open land out in Iowa. He liquidated what he could and gave the rest to relatives with the exception of what he could get into two wagons. Tilgmans's brother Abraham decided he would also like to go and added a third wagon.

By the spring of 1861 he, Abraham & their families had made their way by wagon to Iowa. Wanting to get a crop down, Tilghman settled down on the first reasonable piece of land he could find. This place already had a home that needed only minor repairs. Abraham helped Tilghman get in the first crop but in 1862 rented his own farm house.
