Finding Indian Relationship

I'm trying to find out about a great great grandfather whom was an American Indian. There is a story that he was adopted by a family with a surname of Hunkerford. So he took on their last name, however he was Indian. My Grandmother is unsure if he was Sioux or Crow. If you could help me in any way, shape, or form it would be greatly appreciated.
