Spelling of names

PRINS, SCHUTT

I am again working on the history of my dad's family in Iowa. Wilma Vande Berg was a great help to me when I first began my work in 2003. I have found a lot more information is now available about our Prins family than was available at that time but I am having problems with the spelling of family names and would like for the information I add to our family tree to be accurate. What sources do you consider the most accurate for the spelling of both surnames, middle and given names? For example, my great aunt, name listed as both Tena and Sena Prins, daughter of Jan Prins and Geesje Veld, was married to Frank, last name listed as both Schut and Schutt. Census records are completely unreliable. I considered obituaries and grave markers to be the most reliable but have found some discrepancies even in those. Do you have any suggestions for obtaining accurate names?
