You are so right. The name was both Schmidt and Smith.
The marriage record on page 84 of the Register of Marriages Sioux county is as follows: Bernard Schmidt age 26 of Sioux County born Wisconsin to Christian Schmidt and Christine Kreling married Anna Mary Nandorf 21 of Sioux county born Hanover Germany to Henry Nandorf no mother mentioned, married at Ireton IA March 12, 1901 by the German Lutheran Minister.
The family was living in Center Township Sioux County IA in 1905 Bernard Smith, wife Mrs. B. Smith and children Ethel and Anna Smith.
In 1910 Bernard A. Smith age 38 born abt 1872 in Wisconsin, wife's name Mary A. Smith, they were living in Holly Prowers, Colorado. Children were Ethel H. age 8, Elma H. age 6, Laura M. age 4, Lawrence H. Smith age 1yr 4 mo.
In 1920 the family was living in Walnut, Palo Alto IA Bernard Smith was 49 born 1871-1873 in Wisconisn wifeh Mary Smith born Germany age 37-39, Ethel Smith age 16, Elma age 14, Laura age 13, Lawrence age 11, Willard age 1yr 9 mo.
In the 1925 IA census Bernard Smith born 1872 Wis. resident of Walnut Palo Alto IA, father Christian Smith and Christine Krabline/Krohling, Wife was Marie Wanorn??/ Nandorf or Meiernandorf born abt. 1882 in Germany, father Henry W... mother Elizabeth Ploner/or similiar spelling.
Children: Ethel age 21, Anna age 20, Laura 18, Lawrence 16 and Willard 6.
In the 1930 census the family ws living in King, Winnebago, IA, Bernard b. 1872 Wisconsin wife Marie age 49, Laura age 23, Lawrence 21 and Willard age 11.
Have found the family on www.ancestry.com, will follow up with a report on that to your e-mail address.
