In Response To: Maurice, Iowa Centennial 1891-1991 (Tjerk Bosje)

On page 311 of the Maurice Centennial Book, there is family "De Jong, Cornelius and Neeltje (Bosje)" listed as follows.

"Cornelius De Jong, son of Dick De Jong and Sjoerdje Van De Jong was born March 28, 1869 in the Netherlands.

Neeltje Bosje, daughter of Jan Bosje and Boukje Kuiken was born January 20, 1871 in the Netherlands.

Cornelius De Jong and Neeltje Bosje were married July 2, 1892.

They lived at St. Annaparochie where all twelve of their children were born: Dirk (Dick), Jan (John), Jaap, Eelke, Sjoerdje (Susie), Willem (William), Boukje (Bertha), Tjitske, Tryntje, Tjerk (Charles), Sjouke (George) and Tjisse (Chester). Tryntje, Tjitske and Eelke died in the Netherlands.

The family came to America in July 1919, to the town of Hosper, Iowa. In March of 1920, they moved to a farm three miles south of Newkirk. In 1921, the family moved five miles south and 1 1/2 mile east of Newkirk. Both girls were married at this place in 1922, on the same day. Susie married Evert Van Veldhuizen and Bertha married Dick Smits. In 1932, the parents moved to a farm one mile east and 1/4 mile north of Maurice. The mother died while living in that home on May 22, 1932. The father moved from the farm place to Chicago in 1933. He was married to a lady in Chicago, and she was killed in a car accident in eastern Iowa. The father lived in a little house in Hospers for awhile, then moved in with the Dick Smit family.

He later married Mrs. Tillie Jager from Maurice, and lived in Maurice until she died in 1942. He moved back to the Dick Smit home and spent his last years living with his two daughters, the Smits and the Van Veldhuizens.

He died July 25, 1947. They are both buried in the Orange City, Iowa cemetery.

On page 491 of the Maurice Centennial Book, there is the family "Smit, Dick and Bertha (De Jong)".

Dick Smit, son of Thomas Smit and Marie Stander Smit, was born July 8, 1892 at Haarlemmeer, Netherlands and came to the United States in 1920.

Bertha De Jong Smit, daughter of Cornelius De Jong and Nellie (Bosje) De Jong was born September 28, 1900 at St Annaparochie, Netherlands. She came to America in 1919 with her parents.

Dick and Bertha were married February 22, 1922 on the De Jong farm by Newkirk. Children born to this union were Nellie, Mrs. Stewart Kuiper; Thomas, deceased in 1987; Casey; Peter and John. Dick died January 19, 1972 and Bertha died January 25, 1988. They are both buried in Doon, Iowa cemetery.
