I have found some good information for you.
Elsie Cottrill's husband was James Cottril as listed in the Sioux county cemtery index. He was born Dec 14, 1842 (England according to the 1880 census of his children) He died 4 Nob 1879 and is buried in St. John's Lutheran cemetery rural Ireton IA. If you go to www.iowagravestones.org/search you will see a stone if you put in name Cotrill that had both names on it evidently, of Charles L. and Jas.
There was a son Charles L. who was 2 in 1880. So Elsie (Briggs)? Mrs. James Cottril was widowed at 32 with as three mo. baby Phoebe and four older children and a child died in 1880. She must have moved back to a former home shortly after that.
I found the son Ezra born 19 Oct 1866 at Fondu Lac, WI as he stated in 1880 census he was born in WI. I found a James Cottril 16, working as a farm hand in Osh Gosh WI in the 1860 census.
I found that James Cottril was called for jury duty in Sioux County IA in March of 1877 so they were living here then. Please send my your address and I will send you copies of the documentation for this info and more.
I will also check the Hawarden paper for the death of James in 1879.
