John Lawrence Welch, son of Bridget Hennessy and John Welch, was born Dec.15,1863 in Greeley, Delaware County, Iowa. He moved from Greeley to Hawarden in 1887. He married Catherine DOYLE Feb. 28, 1888 at Hawarden, probably at the Catholic Church (I don't have the records yet). Their son Martin J. was born April 21, 1889 at Westfield, Iowa where it is known John had brothers William and Edward and mother Bridget living at the time of Martin's birth, so it is possible Catherine went there for the birth only and was still living in Hawarden.
The next known birth is John & Catherine's daughter Catherine, born Nov.2,1893 place unknown, died Feb.25,1896 (3 years old)and buried White Lake, Aurora County, S.Dakota. There are two more children listed as preceding John in death(John d.June 25,1935 & buried Sheldon,Iowa) that could possibly have been born and/or died at Hawarden between John's marriage and infant Catherine's death (1888-1896). They would be Thomas E. and Joseph. All together there were 13 children by 1912. I have tracked most of them but this time frame in Hawarden has not been done. After leaving Hawarden the family went to White Lake and Plankington, both Aurora County,S.Dak. and then to unknown in Minnesota, then to Sheldon, O'Brien County,Iowa. All children (with the exception of Martin who moved to Sioux City,Iowa) eventually moved from Sheldon to Wisconsin (Milwaukee area), date unknown.
I am interested in any information concerning the Welch line,(also some of John's nephews were baptised Walsh in Hawarden), and Catherine DOYLE's side of the family, as well as John and Catherine's children especially Catherine, Thomas E. and Joseph who may have been born or died while in Hawarden. Also, does anyone have copies of these records already from St. Mary's Church, Calvary (or Grace Hill?)Cemetery, Sioux County or the state of Iowa, or local newspapers? Are any of these online to look up? Has anyone seen gravestones in Hawarden's cemeteries for Thomas E and/or Joseph Welch? Thanks, Nancy
