June 24, 1904 Hull Index
Comrade John Knewell died Monday afternoon, June 10th. He was born April 5th, sixty eight years ago in Luxemberg, Germany. He emigrated to America with his parents when he was eighteen years of age, settling in Jackson county, Iowa. In 1860 he moved to Hudson County, MN, where he was married to Miss Mary Fisch. Fourteen children were born to Comrade Knewell and wife, four of whom only survive their parent. They are Nickolas, the Misses Anna and Leona, and Mrs. Jno. A. Sayer of Struble IA.

In 1860 he enlisted in Co. G. 1st MN, Inf., the first regiment mustered into the United States service for the civil war. He remained a most loyal and energetic soldier until he received an honorable discharge at the close of the great war. Comrade Knewell was a mechanic, a first class contractor, and up to the last few years he has closely followed his trade. In 1879 he came to Hull at a time when the town was but a few months old. He has continuously resided here ever since, and in the same place, though the small home of pioneer days had given way to a more commodious structure, where in with his family he was passing his life in contentment. Comrade Knewell had failed very preceptably in this physical make up and it was felt when he took to his bed a few weeks since that he would never recover.

So none were surprised when the end finally came, and Comrade Knewll answered to the last roll call.
The funeral took place yesterday morning from the Catholic church, the Grand Army having charge of the services. The Rev. Faiber Smith, a nephew of Comrade Knewell, officiated as spriest; said mass, and then spoke words eulogistic of the G. A. R. and tendered advice and consolation to the widow and children of the departed comrade. A Quartette composed of C. Hook, Mrs. Kloek, Mrs. Olive Putnam and J. W. Tamplin sang songs. Comrades Kent, Gilley and Fink, of Rock Valley, Comrade W. S. Tuttle of Boyden, and Comrades Stickney and Tamplin of Hull were the pall bearers. The remains were lowered to their last resting place in the presence of a large number of the relatives and the old time friends of the family.
