Obituary, publication and date unknown (John died May 8, 1987):
John W. Heemstra was born April 4, 1920 in Hospers and passed away May 8 at the Minnewaska Hospital, Starbuck, Minn.
He served in the U.S. Army from 1941-1946. On Aug. 23, 1946, he was united in marriage to Annabelle Kraai in Orange City. Jay was born July 9, 1951.
Prior to moving to Starbuck, Minn., he worked for the REC, operated Johnny's Shop and farmed. In Starbuck John and Annabele owned and operated Heemstra's Department Store from 1961-82 when they retired.
He was a member of American Legion Post #325, VFW Post #4582, Floyd Lodge #537 A.F. & A.M., Scottish Rites Bodies, Abu Bekr Shrine, Century Chapter #298 Order of Eastern Star.
Mr. Heemstra is survived by his wife, Annabelle, son Jay, his wife Linda; granddaughter Lydia Mae, Curtis and Jean Pederson; four sisters, Mrs. Jen Spykerman, Holland, Mich., Mrs. Dora Nootenboom, Madelia, Minn., Mrs. Francis (sic--Frances) Uittenbogaard, South Holland, Ill., and Mrs. Cynthia DeJong, Jenison, Mich.; one brother, Jake Heemstra, Primghar, and many nephews and nieces.
