Paul Martin Funk, son of Mr. and Mrs. Claus Funk, was born on the 20th day of April, 1833, at Isensee Hanover Germany. On the 10th of June, 1859 he was married to Miss Catherine Horeis. After only two years of married life his young wife died, on the 7th of July, 1861.

In 1868 Mr. Funk was married to Mrs. Margaretha Diers. In 1871 he emigrated to America and for a time lived in Muscatine, Iowa and came to Sioux County in 1879. For 24 years he was active on his farm near Hull, and in 1903, at an age of 70, he retired from farming and made his home in Hull, and three years later his wife died. In 1911 he moved to the home of his granddaughter, Mrs. John Jantzen. Here he stayed until his death which came on the 22nd of August, 1917. Since the 15th of January 1917, the deceased had been confined to his bed and nearly all this time he was completely helpless. But he was tenderly nursed by his granddaughter and gratefully he acknowledged her care of him.

During his long suffering Mr. Funk proved himself a true Christian: always resigned to the will of his Heavenly Father, never complaining and never giving cause for complaint. We hope that in his case the word of promise is verified, "He that endureth to the end shall be saved."

Mr. Funk lived to an age of 84 years 2 months and 2 days. He is mourned by his daughter, Mrs. Margaretta Lutjens, 5 grandchildren, 15 great-grandchildren. Interment was made Friday the 24th of August in the St. Paul's Lutheran cemetery.

In the absence of the pastor, Rev. J.P. Bunge, the services were conducted by Rev. Ed. Goeringer, of Rock Rapids.
