John Everett Van Veldhuizen, 82, of Sioux City IA, passed away Monday, July 1, 2024 at his home after a courageous battle with cancer. Funeral services will be 11:00 A.M. Wednesday, July 10, 2024, at Sunnybrook Community Church. Visitation will be one hour prior to the service time also at the church. Burial will be at Memorial Park Cemetery.

John was born the son of Gradus and Elbertha Dorothy (Aalbers) Van Veldhuizen on February 14, 1942 in Pierre, South Dakota. He graduated From Sanborn Public High School. John married Glenda Hoekstra on July 24, 1962 in Maurice, Iowa. They moved around the Sanborn area before settling in Sioux City.

John worked as a semi-truck driver and dispatcher for most of his years. He ended career as a Sioux City bus driver until his retirement.

He enjoyed reading, model cars and trucks, camping, fishing and traveling. John was a very passionate fan of his children and his grandchildren’s athletic and musical events. He also had many beloved pets. And he liked his toys, especially his Corvettes and Harley.

John and Glenda were both youth leaders and active members of Morningside Reformed Church. John was also a long-time member of Sunnybrook Community Church. He was an active Bible study leader and formed a close bond with his young mens group. John was quoted near the end saying, "there’s always time for God.”

John was very proud of his Dutch heritage as evidenced by his personalized license plates.

John is survived by his wife and best friend, Glenda Van Veldhuizen of Sioux City; daughters Shavelle (Richard) Peschau of Paoli, Oklahoma, Sheryl (Kevin) Welte of Sioux City, Shelly (Matt) Lindell of Seward, Alaska and Shaun (Tim) DeChicchis of Stafford, Virgina; siblings Gladys (Rod) Kroeze, Dennis (Sallee) Van Veldhuizen, and Bonita Kenagy; grandchildren Jonte Harris, Andre (Orlandrea Woods) Harris, Kaylie and Jacob DeChicchis; great-grandchildren, Jalen, Mahlia, Kyrie and Niko; and many nieces, nephews and friends.

He was preceded in death by his parents and brothers, Harold and Larry.
