Mr. Gary Kleinhesselink, age 83, of Orange City, passed away on Saturday, June 8, 2024, at the Orange City Area Health System.

A visitation with the family present will be held on Wednesday, June 12, from 5:00pm to 7:00pm, at the Alton Reformed Church in Alton. There will be a funeral service on Thursday, June 13, at 10:30am, at the church with the Rev. Scott Bonestroo officiating. Interment will follow the service at the West Lawn Cemetery in Orange City. The Oolman Funeral Home in Orange City is in charge of arrangements.

Gary Lee was born on November 30, 1940, the oldest of eight children born to Joe W. and Arabella Mae (Plender) Kleinhesselink. He grew up on his parents’ farm between Alton and Orange City and was a student at the Alton Public School.

He was united in marriage to Betty Jean Posthumus on June 28, 1962, in Sheldon. Aside from a few years in California, the couple made their home in Orange City, where they raised their three children. In earlier years, Gary worked as a truck driver and at Midwest Precast in Orange City. For the majority of his life, he worked as a crew foreman for Russell’s Ready Mix and later for Vander Pol Excavating, overseeing numerous paving projects around Northwest Iowa. Betty passed away on October 10, 2007, in Sheldon, and in November of 2022, Gary became a resident of the Pioneer Memorial Home in Orange City.

Gary was currently a member of the Alton Reformed Church and a former member of the American Reformed Church in Orange City. When he was younger, Gary liked to go bowling and play golf. He also enjoyed playing card games and watching baseball, football, and racing on television. In more recent years, he looked forward to going on trips to see his siblings and was often seen riding around town on his scooter.

He is survived by two sons, Greg Kleinhesselink, of Omaha, Nebraska; and Todd Kleinhesselink, of Orange City; a daughter and her husband, Lisa and Shane Schwarz, of Orange City; five grandchildren, Victoria Elliott; Malorie, and her husband, Michael Von Bank; Luke Kleinhesselink; Jenna Schwarz, and Blake Schwarz; a sister, Judy Schaap, of Sioux Falls; and six brothers, Ken Kleinhesselink, and his wife, Marty, of Casper, Wyoming; Daryl Kleinhesselink, and his wife, Jeanine, of Mint Hill, North Carolina; and Lyle Kleinhesselink, and his wife, Ronda; Leon Kleinhesselink, and his wife, LeAnn; Jim Kleinhesselink; and Mike Kleinhesselink, and his wife, Gina, all of Alton; as well as numerous nieces and nephews.

In addition to his parents and wife of more than 44 years, he was preceded in death by a brother-in-law, Darlo Schaap; and a sister-in-law, Kim Kleinhesselink.

Memorials will be given to the family for future designation.
