Ronald Nelson was born on March 29, 1935, in Rock Valley, the son of Marion and Renzella (Vander Meullen) Klein. He was raised on the family farm near Maurice and attended country school through the eighth grade.

On June 29, 1956, he was united in marriage to Lois Jean Starkenburg at the Second Christian Reformed Church in Orange City. They made their home in Alton, where Ron worked at the Alton Cement Works and at Tolman Manufacturing in Orange City, as well as volunteering with the Alton Fire Department. In 1975, Ron and Lois moved their family to a farm northwest of Maurice. In addition to farming, Ron also worked at Sioux-Preme Packing and Sioux Automation, both in Sioux Center. After retiring, he continued to use his experience as a welder, making box scraper attachments for tractors. After more than 57 years of marriage, Lois passed away at home on March 20, 2014.

Mr. Klein attended the Maurice Reformed Church. He liked being outdoors and could often be found working on various pieces of equipment, making sure everything was running as it should, and playing with his dog, Joey. Family time was important to him, and in earlier years, he and Lois looked forward to a family vacation to California.
