1900 census has John Ahrens born Sep 1828 Germany living in Grant twp Plymouth Co. IA, came in 1867, married to Imke M. Ahrens 84, born Oct 1815 Germany, Imke is the assumed - wife.

Johann Ahrens passed away Saturday Jan 9, 1915, at the home of Ben Specht in Chatsworth, Iowa. His death came quite unexpectedly, following a paralytic stroke. Mr. Ahrens was born Sept 15, 1828, at Burhaven, Germany, and lived to the ripe age of 86 years, 4 months and 4 days. He was baptized and confirmed in the German Lutheran church at Burhaven. In 1854 who married Maria Busher; one son was born to them, and two years after their marriage his wife died. Five years later he married Marin Harms, but she died ten years later, the result of this union being two sons, one of whom died in infancy. He was again married two years afterword to Mrs. Margaret Hinke, and thirteen years later he was called upon to part with his helpmate. In 1866 Mr. Ahrens came with his family to the United States, first locating at Sterling IL. Fifteen years later they came to Iowa, settling in Grant township Plymouth bounty, near the little town of Mammen, and he resided there until about four years ago, since which time he has made his home with relatives in this vicinity. An honest, industrious man through life, he was respected by all who knew him. He is survived by two sons, Gerhard and Wm. Ahrens, both of Akron vicinity and 13 grandchildren and 1 great grandchild.
Funeral services were conducted in the German Lutheran church at Chatsworth Monday afternoon by Rev. Fred A. Meske. The remains were brought to Riverside cemetery for interment. Relatives who came from a distance to attend the funeral were Mr. and Mrs. Siebert Thoel of Manson IA.
