After a lingering illness of several months John B. Wyffels, one of the early settlers of Sioux County died at his home in Rock Valley Saturday evening. Oct 15, his death being caused by cancer of the liver form which he was a great sufferer.
The subject of this sketch was born at Aandeberg in the province of Zeelan, Holland Oct 4, 1837, and was at the time of his death seventy three years and eleven days old. His early life was spent at his home in Zeeland. He was married September 4, 1865 at Oostburg Neth. to Miss Coleta Mabesoone who still survives her husband. To this union were born twelve children, seven boys and five girls all of who are living except John who was killed in a railroad accident in the summer of 1895. He was twenty five years of age a the time.

The children are: Mrs. Emily Baardemaker, Lyon. NY. Mrs. Rosa De Rider of Doon, Jacob B. Wyffels of Rock Valley, Ben L. Wyffels, rock Valley, Mrs. Stena Sanders, Rock Valey; Ed J. Wyffels, Rock Valley, Mrs. Nellie Braat of Rock Valey; Mrs. Emma Splear of Rock Valley; Philip Wyffels, Rock Valley, Henry Wyffels Rock Valley All of whom were present at the bedside of their father during his last hours, with the exception of Mrs. Emily Baarkemaker who on account of her great distance away was not able to be here.

Mr. Wyffels and his family came to America in the spring of 1887, coming directly to Sioux county where he bought a piece of land and farmed it until about eighteen months ago when he moved to Rock Valley where he had made his home up to the time of this death. He was one of Sioux County’s early settlers and was one who did his share to help make the country what it is today. He and his family experienced all the hardships incident to pioneer life, which only pioneers who have endured the privations and hardships can appreciate. Times have changed wonderfully since then. In this time of abundance of everything the younger generation know nothing of what the pioneer endured as he went about poorly clothed and sometime hungry, burned corn stocks and twisted hay for fuel in his homes which were unprotected from the severe storms of winter.

Funeral services were held Tuesday forenoon From St. Mary’s Church in Rock Valley conducted by Rev. Father O’Reilly and the remains were buried in the Catholic cemetery south of town. The bereaved family have the sympathy of the entire community.
