Hawarden Independent of Nov 27, 1913
A cloud of sorrow hovered over the entire neighborhood when it was learned last Thursday morning the Mrs. W. G. (William Gates) Brown had passed away on the previous evening. Th sad news came as a surprise to all, for many of the closest friends of the family were not apprised of the seriousness of her condition, While those who were fearful that the sickness might prove fatal, looked for, at least, a temporary recovery. While she had not been in her usual health for some time, yet she was confined to her home for only a little over a month. On the day of the evening in which she passed away she seemed to be in an improved condition, talking freely to members of the family and the friends who called to see her, and all were hopeful that her life might be prolonged, but the change came suddenly and with practically no warning and without suffering, the spirit passed from the body. Mrs. Brown with her husband traveled quite extensively last summer, visiting their daughter Mrs. Irvin Stewart and other friends in Tacoma Wash., and a sister in Idaho. After their return from their extended visit in the west she seemed to be in perfect health; but the disease which affected her in former years gradually returned, and in spite of the fact the she received the best medical attention and most tender care, the malady proved fatal. The deceased was beloved by all who knew her. Nature had richly endowed her with a pleasant genial disposition. She was a woman of noble character, calm, unassuming and lovable in manner. With her marked natural qualities she possessed a deeply religious mature. She lived an earnest consistent life, faithful in all her religious obligations. Never absent from any of the church services, unless by hindrance hat was unavoidable. Because of those noble qualities, she was honored in the community, endeared by a large circle of friends, a loving wife and tender mother. The funeral was held from the home on Saturday afternoon, conducted by Rev. W. J. Creswell, assisted by Rev J. B. Jackson and Rev. Mark Masters. Interment was in Ireton cemetery. Agnes Watson was born in Clinton county Iowa Feb 3, 1860. she moved with her parents to Tama County in 1873. She was married to W. G. Brown at the farm home of her parents near Reinbeck IA, on Thanksgiving Day, Nov 24, 1881. When about 14 years of age she united with the U.P. Church of Amity. She came with her husband to Sioux county in 1887, where she resided until the time of her death. On last Wednesday evening at a little before ten o’clock she passed to her reward, at the age of 53 years, 9 months and 16 days. There are left to mourn her departure, her husband, three daughters, Miss Margaret Brown, Mrs. Irwin Stewart of Tacoma Wash, and Mrs. Geo. Hoyt of Storm Lake, IA. She also leaves her aged father and mother ,Mr. and Mrs. James Watson of Reinbeck, two brothers and two sisters. The large concourse of people who attended the funeral, together with abundant and beautiful floral offerings, were indicative of the high esteem in which the deceased was held. The sympathy of the whole community goes out to the bereaved husband and daughters, also to the aged father and mother.
