There will be a memorial service on Friday, at 11:00am, at the church with the Rev. Mark Haverdink officiating. The Oolman Funeral Home in Orange City is in charge of arrangements.

Roger Dean was born in Orange City, on July 5, 1938, to Henry G. and Margaret (Plender) De Haan. When he was eight, the family moved to a farm northwest of town, and Roger attended the Newkirk Elementary and High School and Northwestern Junior College, in Orange City.

On June 20, 1961, he married Ardean Franken in Carmel. Together they farmed northwest of Orange City, where they raised their family before moving into town in 1989. Roger loved farming, all things John Deere, white bread, and ice cream with strawberries. He was not fond of coffee, chocolate or broccoli. He enjoyed traveling with Ardean, following MOC-Floyd Valley and Northwestern College sports (especially when his boys where playing), camping, and attending Southern gospel concerts. Rog and Ardean began wintering in Mesa, Arizona, in 1994 because of Ardean’s health challenges. On February 19, 1998, Ardean passed away while traveling home from Arizona.

On March 20, 1999, Roger married Dianne (De Jager) Winters in Boyden. They made their home in Orange City while Roger continued to farm and Dianne did much volunteer work. They also wintered in Mesa, and enjoyed attending gospel concerts, traveling, and attending as many activities of their grandchildren and great grandchildren as time and travel would allow.

Roger was a lifetime member of the First Reformed Church in Orange City, where he served on the consistory, sang in the choir, served on various committees, went on mission trips, and taught Sunday School. He was also active in the Gideons International organization, distributing Bibles to whomever would receive them. Together he and Dianne served their community, church, school, and hospital by volunteering in a variety of ways.

Roger is survived by his wife of more than 24 years, Dianne, of Orange City; his four children and their spouses, Rick and Tina De Haan, of Warsaw, Missouri; Lori and Mark Bloemendaal, of Orange City; Terril and Ronda De Haan, of Burnsville, Minnesota; and Brent and Patti De Haan, of Orange City; eleven grandchildren, Kristi (Daniel) Walkup, Blake (Kelli) De Haan, Jill (Levi) White, Andrew (Juliana) Bloemendaal, Janna (Kadrian) Hardersen, Davis (Johannah) Bloemendaal, Teryn (Brent) Woolf, Teylor (Richie) Clark, Caleb (Paige) De Haan, Grace De Haan, and Lily De Haan; and 26 great grandchildren; as well as Dianne’s family, including five children, Steven Winters, Rick Winters, Bruce (Leann) Winters, Betty Jo Winters (special friend Wayne), and Shellie (Chris) Rader; eleven grandchildren; and four great-grandchildren; he is also survived by four sisters-in-law, Leora De Haan, Alice (Herb) Remmerde, Frieda Bartels, and Mary Ann (Butch) Van Veldhuizen; a brother-in-law, Al (Sue) Franken; numerous nieces and nephews; and Dianne’s extended family, including three sisters, Lavonne Riphagen, Elaine Kragt Vreeman, and Gloria (Tom) Vanden Bosch; and a brother, Marvin (Jennie) De Jager.

In addition to his parents and first wife, he was preceded in death by two brothers, Glenn (Nelvina) De Haan, and Lee De Haan; a brother-in-law, Roland “Blackie” Bartels; and a great-granddaughter, Evalyn De Haan; as well as members of Dianne’s family, including a daughter, Julie Baxter Nash; two sons-in-law, David Baxter and Ryan Nash; a sister and her husband, Darlene (John) Van Holland; and three brothers-in-law, Harvey Kragt, Jay Jackson, and Clayton Vreeman.
