Mrs. Kathleen “Kay” Van Wyk, age 92, of Orange City, passed away on Sunday, July 16, 2023, at the Prairie Ridge Care Center in Orange City.

A visitation with the family present will be held on Tuesday, July 25, from 9:30am to 10:30am at the First Christian Reformed Church in Orange City. There will be a funeral service on Tuesday, at 11:00am, at the church with the Rev. Jordan Helming officiating. Interment will follow the service at the West Lawn Cemetery in Orange City. The Oolman Funeral Home in Orange City is in charge of arrangements.

Kathleen was born on a farm west of Orange City on July 5, 1931, one of eleven children born to Andrew and Tena (Haarsma) Wielenga. She was baptized as an infant at the First Christian Reformed Church in Orange City and grew up on her family’s farm, receiving her education at a nearby country school.

She was united in marriage to Peter Van Wyk on August 22, 1952, at the First Christian Reformed Church in Orange City. Together they made their home and raised their two boys in Orange City. “Kay” was not only a wife and mother, but she also worked part time at the Heritage House Nursing Home and spent 29 years making baked goods and helping in the kitchen at the Pioneer Memorial Home, both in Orange City. Her husband of more than 64 years, Peter, passed away on October 7, 2016, in Orange City, and shortly after, Kay moved to the Pioneer Memorial Home. She later became a resident of Friendly Horizons in Sioux Center until 2021, when she moved to the Prairie Ridge Care Center.

Mrs. Van Wyk was a lifelong member of the First Christian Reformed Church in Orange City where she regularly participated in the women’s ministries and attended Bible study. She was an avid reader of Christian and inspirational books and stories and liked to read about current news and politics. She enjoyed spending time and having coffee with her friends and could often be found knitting and crocheting, regularly giving her creations as gifts to her family.

She is survived by her two sons, Peter Van Wyk, Jr., of Alton; and Mark Van Wyk, and his wife, Erica, of Castle Rock, Colorado; seven grandchildren, Nathan Van Wyk, and his wife, Mandy, of Sioux Falls, South Dakota; Heath Van Wyk, and his wife, Kate; Nick Van Wyk; and Curt Van Wyk, all of Boise, Idaho; Seth Van Wyk, and his wife, Stephanie, of Centennial, Colorado; Randi, and her husband, Michael Winegardner, of Littleton, Colorado; and Mariah, and her husband, Steevy Solomon, of Las Vegas, Nevada; eleven greatgrandchildren and a twelfth due soon; a brother, Verne Wielenga, of Orange City; two sisters, Lois De Beer; and Delores, and her husband, Henry Kramer, all of Orange City; and two sisters-in-law, Janice Wielenga, of Orange City; and Margaret Wielenga, of Santa Maria, California; as well as numerous nieces and nephews.

In addition to her parents and husband, she was preceded in death by five brothers, Henry Wielenga, and his wife, Shirley; Lawrence Wielenga as an infant; Enno Wielenga; Donald Wielenga; and Laurie Wielenga, and his wife, Janet; two sisters, Marie, and her husband, George Kuik; and Bernice, and her husband, Alfred Wassenaar; a brother-in-law, Fred De Beer; and a sister-in-law, Myrna Wielenga.

Memorials will be given to the Prairie Ridge Care Center.
