Services for Arlene K. Sterler, age 75, of Sheldon who passed away on Wednesday, June 14, 2023, at Spencer Hospital. Her funeral service will be 2:00 P.M. on Monday, June 19, 2023, at Faith Community Church in Sheldon with Pastor Kevin Gingerich ~ Officiating.

Burial will be at East Lawn Cemetery in Sheldon.

Visitation with family present will be from 2 – 4 P.M. on Sunday, June 18, 2023, at the Vander Ploeg Funeral Home in Sheldon.

In lieu of flowers, memorials may be directed to the family for a future charitable donation.

Arlene Kae Sterler, the daughter of Fred William and Clara (Dirksen) Bonestroo was born on October 28, 1947, in Rock Valley, Iowa. Her family moved to Sheldon when she was nine, and she attended Sheldon Public School and graduated from Sheldon High School in 1965. She continued her education at Stewarts Beauty School in Sioux City. She was united in marriage to Robert ‘Bob’ Sterler on December 22, 1965, at the Sheldon United Methodist Church. The couple lived in Florida & Texas while Bob was in the service before returning to Sheldon to raise their family, Karen, Bill & Robbie. Arlene owned and operated Arlene’s Beauty Salon for many years, retiring in 2014. Arlene passed away on Wednesday, June 14, 2023, at Spencer Hospital reaching the age of 75 years, 7 months, and 16 days.

Arlene was a member of the Sheldon United Methodist Church where she was involved in women’s groups and circle, was a founding member of the Cookie Walk and did hair and makeup for the Living Last Supper Performance for many years. She was a member of the V.F.W. Women’s Auxiliary. She enjoyed going to their cabin at Okoboji, reading, boating, traveling, and spending time with her sisters. Arlene passionately advocated for cancer patients, providing support, prayers, and donating countless hours fitting, cutting, and styling wigs for hair loss patients. She always had an optimistic outlook & a positive attitude in every situation, always willing to help anyone, and was kind towards every person that she met. Arlene genuinely loved spending time with her children, grandchildren, and great grandchildren.

Left to cherish her memory, are her husband, Bob of Hartley, three children, Karen (Craig) Christians of Blue Earth, Minnesota, Bill (Renee) Sterler of Sanborn and Robbie Korthals (fiancé, Ryan Gillaspie) of Rock Rapids, Iowa; grandchildren, Cody (Jana) Christians, Brandon (Nicole) Christians, Courtney Christians, Travis Sterler, Dayna Korthals, Ryan Sterler (fiancé, Maggie Ohrt), and Dalton Korthals; two great grandchildren, Mikayla and Kayden Christians; three sisters, Lynn Seivert, Pat (Larry) Snyder, and Pam (Darrell) Kruger; sisters & brothers in-law: Roger Sterler, Madonna Feyerabend, Ronald Sterler and Marilyn Rees; and also many nieces, nephews, other relatives and friends.

Arlene was preceded in death by her parents, her parents in-law, John & Frances Sterler, sisters-in-law, Dena Sterler, Phyllis Sterler & JoAnne Sterler, brothers-in-law, Dean Seivert, Arnie Verrips, Lawrence Feyerabend, & John Rees, nieces, Shelly Palmer, Bella Snyder, Francein Verrips, & Donna Sterler, nephews, Ryan Ennema & Kent Olson, & her beloved mini schnauzer, Molly Mae.
