Mr. Wendell Dekker, age 77, of Hospers, passed away on Tuesday, May 23, 2023, at the Happy Siesta Health Care Center in Remsen.

There will be a funeral service on Monday, June 19, at 10:00am, at the Newkirk Reformed Church in rural Hospers with the Rev. Dr. Brian Janssen officiating. Refreshments and a time of visitation with the family will take place at the church following the interment at the Newkirk Cemetery in rural Hospers. The Oolman Funeral Home in Hospers is in charge of arrangements.

Wendell Jay was born on February 20, 1946, in Orange City, the son of Gerrit and Clarissa (De Jong) Dekker. He was raised on a farm near Newkirk and received his grade school education from Newkirk School, and attended Floyd Valley High School, in Alton.

In 1965, Wendell moved to Hospers with his parents and worked with his father as a cleanup man at Hospers Packing Plant for seven years. He was then the custodian for the Hospers Christian School for sixteen years, retiring in 1991. In October of 2022, he became a resident of the Happy Siesta Health Care Center.

Wendell was a member of the Newkirk Reformed Church.

Survivors include his sister, Debra Dekker, of Washington D.C.

He was preceded in death by his parents.

Memorials will be given to the family for future designation.
