De Groot, Lavonne (Mrs. Anthony) 1929-2023

Mrs. Lavonne De Groot, age 94, of Hull, passed away on Tuesday, May 30, 2023, at the Prairie Ridge Care Center in Orange City.

A visitation with the family present will be held on Sunday, June 4, from 1:30pm to 3:30pm at the Oolman Funeral Home in Hull. There will be a funeral service on Monday, June 5, at 10:30am, at the First Reformed Church in Hull with the Rev. Adam Van Der Stoep officiating. Interment will follow the service at the Hope Cemetery in Hull.

Lavonne was born on February 24, 1929, in Hull, the only child born to Friedrich “Fritz” and Alvina (Stoehr) Jantzen. She grew up on a farm near Hull and attended country school and the Hull High School.

On March 8, 1950, she was united in marriage to Anthony G. De Groot at the St. Paul Lutheran Church in rural Hull. They made their home on a farm near Hull, where they raised their two children. In addition to being a wife and mother, Lavonne regularly helped Anthony with the fieldwork. After retiring, the couple moved to a house in Hull, where Anthony passed away on September 22, 2008, after more than 58 years of marriage. In early 2020, Lavonne moved to the Pleasant Acres Care Center in Hull, and shortly thereafter she became a resident of the Prairie Ridge Care Center in Orange City.

Mrs. De Groot was a member of the First Reformed Church, where in earlier years, she taught Sunday school classes and participated in the church’s Ladies Aid. Lavonne liked to sew, enjoyed going bowling and fishing, and playing card games. She will be remembered by her children and grandchildren as an excellent cook and baker.

Survivors include a daughter and her husband, Beverly and Wallace Boogerd, of Orange City; and a son and his wife, Brent and Starla De Groot, of Hull; six grandchildren, Emily, and her husband, Matthew Hekman; Kristin, and her husband, Matthew Mellema; Matthew Boogerd, and his wife, Janey; Ashley Boone; Amy De Groot; and Alyssa, and her husband, Brian Harms; fourteen great-grandchildren; and a dear friend, Bill Plantage, of Sheldon.

She was preceded in death by her parents and husband.

Memorials will be given to the First Reformed Church in Hull and The Orange City Christian School.
