From the Alton Democrat, September 15, 1939, Hull news:

William Scholten, who died at the hospital at Rock Rapids, was buried Friday with funeral services being held in the First Reformed church here, in charge of Rev. De Jongh of Rock Rapids and Rev. Douwstra. He had attained the age of nearly 64 tears. Five brothers mourn his departure--John, Jake, Henry, Marinus and Gerrit.

Wm. Scholten Buried Here Saturday; Died Wednesday

The funeral of Wm. Scholten, a former resident of Hull and a brother of Gerrit Scholten of this place, was held from the First Reformed Church of Hull, Friday afternoon, conducted by Rev. John De Jong of Rock Rapids and Rev. G. H. Douwstra of Hull. Interment was made in Hope Cemetery in Hull.

Mr. Scholten passed away last week Wednesday at the County Home near Rock Rapids, where he had been an inmate for several years. Sincere sympathy is extended to the surviving relatives in their hour of bereavement.

His death certificate (informant John A. Scholten of Rock Valley) has William Scholten, resident of Rock Rapids for 40 years; born October 30, 1875 in Chicago, Illinois; parents Albert John Scholten and Gertjen Hendrichs, both born in Holland; single; a retired farmer; died in the Rock Rapids County Home at 8 p.m. September 5, 1939; cause, coronary occlusion, onset Sept. 1, 1939.

The Sioux County Cemetery Index has William Scholten, born 31 Oct 1875, died 5 Sep 1939, Hope Cemetery, Hull. A photo of his headstone on FindaGrave.com confirms this information. FindaGrave gives his name as William M. Scholten; parents Albert Jan Scholten (1846-1917) and Gertjen Hendriks Scholten (1844-1911). Brothers John Albert (1868-1953), Manus Jacobus (1872-1953), Hendrik Jan (1873-1951), Marinus (1878-1953), and Gerrit John (1886-1964).

The 1930 U.S. census shows him (as Will M.) living in Sioux Township, Lyon County with his brother Marinus and family. Marinus is a farmer; Will’s occupation is “none.”

His World War I draft registration card (September 1918) shows him, age 42, residence Route 1, Doon, Lyon County, working as a farm laborer for Marinus Scholten. Medium height and build, dark blue eyes, brown hair.
