Mrs. L. Scholten Called By Death

Mrs. L. Scholten passed away at her home on Thursday, Feb.10, 1944 at the age of 85 years.

Mrs. Scholten was born in Germany on July 8, 1858 and came to the Netherlands as a young child and after the death of her parents she was placed in an orphanage at Neer Bosch. On March 3, 1886 she was united in marriage to Lambertus Scholten and immediately after their marriage they came to the United States and made their home at Orange City where the deceased lived until the death of Mr. Scholten in Sept. 1939. Since that time she has made her home in Sioux Center.

She was preceded in death by her husband and two daughters and one son: Bernadina who died Nov. 4, 1919, Dr. John Scholten who died March 8, 1938 and Mrs. John Kroon who passed away Jan. 9, 1944. One son, William, survives.

Brief services were held at the house on Monday afternoon with the Rev. R. D. Meengs officiating and at the First Reformed Church at Orange City with the Rev. Henry Colenbrander officiating. She was a pioneer member of the Orange City Church and interment was made at the Orange City Cemetery.

MRS. LAMBERTUS SCHOLTEN

Mrs. Lambertus Scholten, nee Marie L. E. Schwarz, formerly of Orange City passed away at the home of her daughter, Mrs. Kroon at Sioux Center Thursday Feb. 10 where she had made her home for the past 4 years.

Mrs. Scholten was born at Maagdenburg, Germany on July 8. 1858. She was married to Mr. Scholten on March 3, 1886. After their marriage the couple migrated to America arriving in Sioux county and settled here.

Four children were born to them, 3 of whom preceded their mother in death. They are Berendina, 24 who died in 1919, Dr. John, 48 who died in 1938 and Mrs. Kroon who died a month ago. Mr. Scholten passed away 4 years ago.

Surviving her are 1 son William of Aurora, IL., 9 grandchildren, 1 great grandchild and 1 brother, Karel Schwarz at Sibley, la. Mrs. Scholten died from cancer. She was a resident of the Neer bosch Orphanage at Nymegen, the Netherlands at the time of her marriage.

Funeral services were conducted at the Kroon home in Sioux Center Monday with the Rev Meengs in charge and in the First Ref. church at Orange City with Rev. H. Colenbrander officiating. Interment was made the Orange City cemetery

She does not appear in the Sioux County Cemetery Index. However, she does have a FindaGrave.com page, which gives her name as Marie Louise Ida “Eda” Scholten; born 18 July 1858 in Stadtkreis Magdeburg, Sachsen-Anhalt, Germany; died 10 Feb 1944 in Sioux Center Iowa; buried West Lawn Cemetery Orange City, Iowa. Husband Lambertus Scholten (1861-1939, married 1887). Three of her children are listed: William A. J. Scholten (1898-1954), Berendina Scholten (1894-1919), and Wilhelmina Sophia Scholten Kroon (1887-1944). There is a photo of her headstone, which shows her as Eda Scholten; this is the only place where this is given as her primary name.

U.S. census records give her name as Marie L. E. or Marie L. I. Scholten. Birth and marriage records for her children an Ancestry.com give her birth name as Marie Louise Ida Schwarz.
