Mr. Joshua “Josh” Beltman, age 22, of Orange City, passed away on Thursday, January 5, 2023, at the Orange City Area Health System.

A visitation with the family present will be held on Thursday, January 12, from 5:00pm to 7:00pm, at the New Hope Evangelical Free Church in Orange City. A prayer service will take place on Friday, January 13, at 12:30pm, at the church, followed by interment at the West Lawn Cemetery in Orange City. There will be a memorial service on Friday, at 2:00pm, at the church, with the Rev. Jeffrey Whitt officiating. The Oolman Funeral Home in Orange City is in charge of arrangements.

Joshua Mark Beltman was born to Daryl Jay and Shirley Renae (Den Hartog) Beltman on October 25, 2000, in Orange City. From an early age Josh loved Veggie Tales and anything “Cars,” but most of all he loved his little sister, Laura. He protected her, encouraged her, and would do anything for her. His face would light up when she entered the room. They were lifelong best friends.

Josh attended Orange City Christian School and graduated from Unity Christian High School. He usually had a smile on his face, loved learning and loved being with people. He enjoyed playing hockey with his friends on the Sioux Center Tornadoes and Storm teams and was an avid Minnesota Wild fan. His passion for music started early, beginning with the piano, adding the string bass, percussion, and later electric bass and acoustic guitars. In high school, Josh was an active leader in orchestra, band, choir, Knightsounds, Instruments of Praise, and praise teams for chapels. He also served as a Living Group leader and class officer. The Lord blessed him with four years of participation in the Iowa All-State Music Festival playing his string bass, which was a highlight of his high school career. His classmates will remember him for his kind heart, love of neon colors, extensive collection of Sharpie markers, and supply of Starburst candy that he shared from his locker.

Josh was a member of the New Hope Evangelical Free Church in Orange City. His heart for worship grew as he was involved with the church’s praise team, Sunday school, youth group, Bible study group, Challenge conferences, and a mission trip to Haiti. Outside of school and church, Josh enjoyed working part-time at Ace Hardware in Orange City, where he would greet customers with his bright smile and helpful demeanor.

In March of 2019, Josh accepted a music scholarship at Bethel University in St. Paul with aspirations to be a music educator and worship leader. The Lord used his gifts in unexpected ways. Josh was diagnosed with a rare, cancerous brain tumor on April 2, 2019. He valiantly fought through numerous surgeries, treatments, and therapies. In his 438 hospitalized days in Sioux Falls, Rochester, and Orange City, as well as the days in between at home, he consistently displayed the joy and peace of knowing Jesus to all those he encountered. He indeed taught and led many people to worship throughout his journey.

Those grateful for having been a part of his life include his parents, Daryl and Shirley, and his younger sister, Laura, all of Orange City; his aunts and uncles, Ron and Mary Beltman, Dennis and Sharon Den Hartog, Marcia and Terry Arends, Becky and Curt Vogel, Donna Den Hartog, and Fred Krommendyk, all of Orange City; as well as numerous cousins and many friends.

He was preceded in death by his grandparents, Orville and Edna Beltman, and Clarence and Jeanette Den Hartog; a step-grandmother, Marjorie Beltman; and an aunt, Jane Krommendyk.

In lieu of flowers or plants, the Beltman Family requests memorial gifts be directed to Orange City Christian School and Unity Christian High School.
