There will be a private family funeral service on Wednesday, February 8, at the Oolman Funeral Home in Hull with the Rev. Wayne Sneller officiating. Interment will follow the service at the Hope Cemetery in Hull.

Jerlene Helen was born to Lige G. and Jeanette H. (Van Maanen) Mars on February 9, 1957, in Orange City. She grew up in Orange City and graduated from the Maurice-Orange City High School in 1975. She briefly worked at K-Products in Orange City before accepting a position at the Northwestern State Bank in Orange City.

She was united in marriage to Virgil Lee Van Schepen on October 16, 1976, at the First Christian Reformed Church in Orange City. “Jer” and “Virg” made their home in Maurice and were blessed with three sons. As a young mother, Jer worked part-time at the bank, filling in as needed. Once her children were older, she started working full-time as the manager of the bank’s Maurice office. In 2005, she retired from the bank in order to help take care of her grandchildren, and later her aging mother and stepfather, which she did until suffering a stroke in 2017.

Jerlene was a member of the First Reformed Church in Maurice and a former member of the First Christian Reformed Church in Orange City. Being a mother and grandmother was Jer’s greatest joy in life, and she regularly attended her sons’ and grandchildren’s extracurricular activities. She also enjoyed spending time with her extended family, often getting together with the Mars or Van Schepens on Sunday afternoon.

Survivors include her husband of more than 46 years, Virgil, of Maurice; her three sons and their families, Daniel and Gretta Van Schepen, and their children, Matthew and Jacob; and Joseph and Melissa Van Schepen, and their children, William and Henley, all of Sioux Falls; and Adam and Amy Van Schepen, and their children, Karlie, Kaden, Kyler, Kenadee, and Kambrie, of Rock Valley; a brother and his wife, Jason and Roxanne Mars, of Orange City; a sister and her husband, Jane and Todd Anderson, of Sioux Falls; a brother-in-law, Clark Van Schepen, of Boyden; and two sisters-in-law, Diane Stam, of Oskaloosa; and LaVonne Van Schepen, of Hospers; as well as several nieces and nephews.

In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by a stepfather, Harold Jager; her husband’s parents, Donald and Lorene Van Schepen; and a brother-in-law, Calvin Stam.

Memorials will be given to Hope Haven in Rock Valley.
