Mr. Marion “Mick” Vande Brake, age 86, of Orange City, passed away on Friday, January 13, 2023, at the Orange City Area Health System.

A visitation with the family present will be held on SUNDAY, JANUARY 15, from 3:00pm to 5:00pm, at the First Reformed Church in Orange City. A prayer service will take place on TUESDAY, JANUARY 17, at 10:00am, at the church, followed by interment at the West Lawn Cemetery in Orange City. There will be a memorial service on TUESDAY, at 11:00am, at the church with the Rev. Mark Haverdink officiating. The Oolman Funeral Home in Orange City is in charge of arrangements.

Marion “Mick” J. was born on July 15, 1936, on his family’s farm, one of seven children born to Bert J. And Bessie (Tiemersma) Vande Brake. He was raised on the farm and attended the West Branch No. 7 Country School through the eighth grade. He was a student at Sioux Center High School through his junior year when his family moved to Orange City. He graduated from the Orange City High School in 1953 before enrolling at the Northwestern Junior College for one year.

He was united in marriage to Gertrude J. Mars on June 28, 1957, in Orange City, where they made their home and raised their six children. Mick worked for the Alton Rendering Plant for 42 years. “Gert” passed away on September 6, 1997, in Orange City, after more than 40 years of marriage. On May 26, 2001, Mick married Betty J. (Van Otterloo) Van Engen in Hull. They made their home in Orange City

He was a longtime member of the First Reformed Church in Orange City. He liked to go camping and play card games. He also enjoyed hunting, fishing, gardening, and vacationing with family.

Survivors include his wife of nearly 22 years, Betty; six children and their spouses, Bonita and James Juffer; Brian and Diane Vande Brake; Brenda and Kyle Schuiteman; Bridget and Les Vander Tuin; Mary and William Peterson; and Benjamin and Renae Vande Brake; two stepchildren, Arlan Van Engen, and his wife, Shawna; and Darla Peterson; 18 grandchildren; eleven step-grandchildren; eleven great-grandchildren; eleven step-great-grandchildren; and a sister and her husband, Marla and Del Horstman.

In addition to his parents and first wife, Mick was preceded in death by a son-in-law, Robert Sneller; a step-son-in-law, Michael Peterson; three sisters, Florence Gunderson, Josephine Wielenga, and Betty Mouw; and two brothers, Bill Vande Brake and David Vande Brake.

Memorials may be directed to the Alzheimer’s Association.
