Mrs. Johanna Westra, age 94, of Hull, passed away on Monday, September 5, 2022, at the Crown Pointe Estates Care Center in Sioux Center.

A visitation with the family present will be held on Friday, September 9, from 5:00pm to 7:00pm at the Oolman Funeral Home in Hull. There will be a funeral service on Saturday, September 10, at 1:00pm, at the First Christian Reformed Church in Hull with the Rev. Loren Kotman officiating. Interment will follow the service at the Hope Cemetery in Hull.

Johanna was born on February 14, 1928, in Hull, the daughter of Joe and Alice (Brummel) Kroese. She grew up on her parents’ farm in rural Hull and attended country school.

On February 14, 1951, she married Sidney H. Westra at the First Christian Reformed Church in Hull. As a young couple, they made their home on farms near Montevideo and Bigelow, Minnesota, before settling in the Middleburg area, where “Jo” was a homemaker and helped “Sid” on the farm. After retiring, the couple moved to Hull, and Jo worked seasonally at Natural Beauty Growers. Sidney passed away on June 6, 2008, in Sioux Center, after more than 57 years of marriage. In July of 2020, Jo moved to Aspen Heights in Hull, and in January of 2021, she became a resident of Crown Pointe Estates Care Center.

Mrs. Westra was a member of the First Christian Reformed Church in Hull, where she participated in the Bereans Bible Study. She cherished spending time with her family and often hosted Sunday dinner for them. She enjoyed spending time in her garden, crocheting, reading, and listening to Western Christian High School and Dordt University sporting events on the radio.

Survivors include her four daughters, Arlys, and her husband, Dick Van Nyhuis, of Boyden; Ardelle Westra, of Sioux City; Sharon Westra, of Sioux Center; Marcia, and her husband, Randy Vander Weide, of Rock Valley; a son, Rob Westra, and his wife, Amy, of Boyden; thirteen grandchildren; and ten great-grandchildren.

In addition to her parents and husband, she was preceded in death by a son, Paul Westra; and two brothers and their wives, Albert and Florence Kroese; and James and Janet Kroese.

Memorials will be given to the Hull Christian School or the Western Christian High School in Hull.
