From the Alton Democrat, December 19, 1941, Struble news:

Mrs. Chas. Ison Passes On

Susan Allen, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Lemuel Allen, was born in Canada April 19, 1866. When 5 years old she came with her parents to Reading twp. Sioux county, where they homesteaded the place now known as the Albert Albers farm near Struble. In 1891 she was married to Charlie Ison of Alcester, S.D. and began keeping house on a farm he had recently purchased.

To this union 5 children were born of whom 4 remain with the husband to mourn her passing. They are Mrs. Isabel Willerton, Kenosha, Wis., Mrs. Margaret Jacobson, Beresford, S.D., Mrs. Elinor Keene, Huron, S.D., Guy Ison, Alcester, S.D., and two sisters and two brothers, Mrs. Margaret Millard, Falls Church, Va., Mrs. Agnes Gaffney, Emmet, Neb., Dougal Allen, Emmet, Neb., and Edgar Allen of Des Moines.

Mrs. Ison, who had been in poor health for several years, died in the hospital at Hudson, S.D. Nov. 24, 1941. Funeral services were held Nov. 27 and burial made at Alcester.

With the passing of Mrs. Ison death came to two members of the Allen family in less than a month. Hamlet Allen, her younger brother and twin of Edgar, passed away on Oct. 31st at Iowa City where he had gone for an operation.... [see his obituary, posted separately].

RESEARCH NOTES

Her FindaGrave.com page shows her buried in Gothland Cemetery, Beresford, Union County, South Dakota. Parents Lemuel Allen (1828-1904) and Margaret Peggy McMillian Allen (1840-1920); both are buried at Ireton, Sioux County. Eight siblings listed. Spouse Charles W. Ison (1864-1943). Four children listed: Isabel Ison Willerton (1892-1968), Guy A. Ison (1894-1975), Laurance A. Ison (1902-1904), and Eleanor A. Ison Keene (1908-1960). There is a photo of her headstone.

The 1880 U.S. census shows the Lemuel Allen family, including 14-year-old Susan, farming in Reading Township, Sioux County.

The Sioux County marriage register for 1890/1891 has groom Charles W. Ison, age 28, resident of Alcester, Dakota, a farmer, born in England, parents Elias Ison and Ann Beaumont; bride Susan Allen, age 25, resident of Sioux County, born in Canada, parents Samuel Allen and Margaret McMillan; married in Reading Township February 13, 1891.
