Joyce Geneva was born on February 21, 1933, in Hull, the daughter of Gerrit and Dena (Hubers) Van Pykeren. She grew up in Hull where she attended the Hull Christian School and Western Christian High School. After graduating in 1950, she started working at the Sheldon Telephone Office as well as at Len’s Market and Kooiker Chevrolet.

She was united in marriage to Pier W. Wynia on February 4, 1953, at the First Christian Reformed Church in Hull. Two years later, after Pier returned from his military service, the couple settled on a farm near Larchwood, where they raised their five children. In 1975, as Pier’s health declined, the family moved to Rock Rapids, where Joyce worked as a secretary at K-Products. On July 7, 1984, Joyce married Walter Vernon Vander Well, and together they made their home in Hull. After 21 years, Joyce retired from K-Products in 1995. She then worked part-time at the Foreign Candy Company in Hull for sixteen years and volunteered her time at Justice for All in Rock Valley and at the Treasure Chest II in Hull. She and Vern delivered for Meals on Wheels and together they enjoyed attending Gospel Music events, regularly traveling to Branson, Missouri, to attend shows. Vern passed away on April 18, 2010, in Rock Rapids, after more than 25 years together.

In earlier years, Mrs. Vander Well was an active member of the Rock Rapids Christian Reformed Church. She was currently a member of the First Christian Reformed Church in Hull, where she participated in the Mission Guild and Bereans Bible Study. She regularly attended the community Coffee Break Bible Study, and looked forward to socializing with her friends, often playing games together or going out to eat. In her free time, Joyce enjoyed listening to music and playing the piano, doing counted cross stitch and Sudoku puzzles, and using her iPad to play Words with Friends and to keep in touch with family through her Facebook account.
