From the Alton Democrat, October 23, 1936, Rock Valley news:

Henry Bauman who has been ill for a long period passed away at his home on Tuesday. Mr. Bauman was 75 years old at the time of his demise and fifty-one years of this life was spent in Rock Valley. Mr. Bauman was an expert tin smith and plumber where he was in business and also was employed by the A. F. Schemmer Hardware firm where he made many friends. He was a genial man and always tried to please his customers and employers. Mr. Bauman watched Rock Valley grow up from a few places to the present thriving business town. He leaves to mourn his passing, his wife and two daughters. The two daughters live in Minneapolis, Minn. Two sons preceded him and his widow of Rock Valley. Funeral services were held at 9 o’clock Monday morning in St. Mary’s church. Interment was made in St. Mary’s cemetery.

OBITUARIES--HENRY BAUMAN

Henry Bauman died at his home in Rock Valley at one o’clock Friday, Oct. 16 at the age of 75 years. He was taken seriously ill last March and was forced to remain in bed since that time.

Mr. Bauman was born in Sheboygan, Wis. on June 20, 1861. His early life was spent in Wisconsin. Mr. Bauman was united in marriage with Gertrude Margaret Weis at Minneapolis, fifty two years ago. Shortly after their marriage they came to Rock Valley in 1885. They have made their home here ever since.

Mr. Bauman is survived by his wife, and two daughters, who are Mrs. Mathilda Lomax and Miss Josephine Bauman, both of Minneapolis. Two sons, Tom and William preceded him in death.

As one of the first hardware merchants in Rock Valley, Mr. Bauman saw much of the building up of the town of Rock Valley. About thirty-five years ago he sold his hardware store. Since that time he has been employed in the Schemmer hardware store continually until he became ill in March.

Mr. Bauman was always a very ardent sportsman. Hunting and fishing were his chief hobbies. He was considered one of the best marksmen in this part of the state. He proved his skill by the game he brought back from hunting trips.

Funeral services for Mr. Bauman were held in the St. Mary’s Catholic church, Monday morning. Burial was made in the Catholic cemetery south of Rock Valley.

His death certificate (informant Mathilda G. Lomax, Minneapolis) has Henry Charles Bauman, resident of Rock Valley for 50 years; wife Gertrude Margaret Weis; born June 20, 1861 in Sheboygan, Wis.; father John Bauman, mother’s name unknown to the informant, both born in Germany; occupation, clerk, hardware store, A. F. Schemmer, 40 years in this occupation, last worked April 1936; died at 1:30 p.m. October 16, 1936; cause, cerebral hemorrhage, onset June 1936, and terminal bronchopneumonia, onset Oct. 13, 1936; buried at Rock Valley.

He does not appear in the Sioux County Cemetery Index, and no FindaGrave page for him was found.

The 1900 U.S. census for Rock Valley shows the Bauman family: Henry C. (38), born in Wisconsin, occupation hardware, married 15 years; wife Gertrude (40), born in Germany, immigrated 1882; children Josie (12), Tom (13), Willie (11) and Tillie (10). The 1910 census shows Gertrude as the mother of 5 children, 4 living. The 1925 Iowa state census gives his parents as John Bauman and Minn[?] Velatrin[?].
