Mrs. H. Bauman Laid to Rest Monday, July 28

Mrs. Henry Charles Bauman (nee Gertrude Margaret Weiss) was born at Trier, Germany, on October 20, 1859. As a young girl she came to America with a younger brother, Peter, and made her home with her older brother, Matthew, of Minneapolis, Minn., where she resided until her marriage to Henry Charles Bauman who preceded her in death on October 12, 1936.

As a young couple they came to Rock Valley, among the early pioneers of this prairie country.

She was a very quiet, sweet and unassuming woman and a faithful member of St. Mary’s Catholic church where funeral services were held Monday morning, July 28, at 9 A.M. Rev. David T. McGoey officiated at requiem high mass and she was laid to rest in the family plot at St. Mary’s cemetery.

She was the last surviving member of a family of three sisters and two brothers. She leaves to mourn, two daughters—Josephine and Mathilde (Mrs. R. L. Lomax) who was called home to help care for her during her last illness. She passed quietly away at the old home where she had lived for over 45 years, at 3 P.M. on Friday, July 25.

Her death certificate (informant Mrs. R. L. Lomax, Minneapolis) has Mrs. Gertrude Margaret Bauman, widow of Henry Bauman; resident of Rock Valley; born Oct. 20, 1858 in Germany; father Mathias Weiss, mother’s name unknown to the informant; died at 3 p.m. July 25, 1941; cause, auricular fibrillation and uremia, duration 30 days; due to toxic edenoma-goitre, duration 10 years; due to cardio-renal disease, duration [question mark]; buried in St. Mary’s Cemetery, Rock Valley.

She does not appear in the Sioux County Cemetery Index, and no FindaGrave page for her was found.

Germany, Select Births and Baptisms [index] on Ancestry.com has an entry for Gertrudis Weis, baptized 20 Oct. 1859 in Katholisch, Idenheim, Rheinland, Prussia; parents Nicolai Weis and Anna Mariae Feltes.

The 1900 U.S. census for Rock Valley shows the Bauman family: Henry C. (38), born in Wisconsin, occupation hardware; wife Gertrude (40, born Oct. 1859), married 15 years, born in Germany, immigrated 1882; children Josie (12), Tom (13), Willie (11) and Tillie (10). The 1910 census shows her as the mother of 5 children, 4 living. The 1925 Iowa state census gives her father’s surname as Weis, no additional data on her parents.
